» CHARACTER INFORMATIONCharacter NAME: Kenjirou Tateyama
Canon & MEDIUM: Kagerou Project - Light novel/Manga
Canon PULL-POINT: Post-chapter 7.
Character AGE: 38
Character ABILITIES: Being a teacher of the subject, Kenjirou has a working knowledge of biological sciences. He actually shows excitement for things such as a rare fish, displaying a clear passion for the world of nature. However, perhaps unexpectedly, he is also quite capable with a computer, able to program entire video games in a week. Coupled with his awareness of online gaming bigshots, one can assume that, despite his age, Kenjirou is not at all behind the times when it comes to technology.
Character HISTORY: Kenjirou seems to have lost his wife at some unspecified point in his life, taking care of his daughter, Ayano, by himself.
As of volume 2 of the light novel (which is almost entirely a flashback), we only have Kenjirou's past from three years ago to work with. He is described as the main science teacher of a Japanese high school. Despite that, he is assigned to a class with only 2 students as their homeroom teacher, somehow being deemed apt to take care of them despite their physical disabilities.
The culture festival comes around, and Kenjirou is revealed to have essentially sold out his two students, having said earlier they didn't have to prepare anything, but later telling the school's chairman that they would blow him away with their work. Kenjirou chips in by utterly wasting their budget on selfish reasons, but he does lend his video game programming skills to make a shooting game.
Kenjirou disappears for a while after this, not actually staying with the class during the culture festival. He only shows up (quite purposefully) once the hard work is over, taking his two students out to dinner as a reward. He befriended them to such a degree that he was invited to a Christmas party which ended rather disastrously. One of his students actually passed out from his condition, so he helped take him to the hospital, comforting the other one and assuring her he would be okay. We don't see much of Kenjirou after said student regains consciousness.
It is around this time that his daughter tragically commits suicide. The event... shook Kenjirou. He seems to have retrieved her hair pins, wearing them on his shirt from then on, and his personality drastically shifted. We don't really see his reaction to the event, but we do see him two years later, teaching the sister of his daughter's best friend. Though now a much stricter teacher (he actually isn't comfortable with low grades anymore), he does display a degree of empathy by recognizing how hard it must be to juggle certain obligations with studying. That was Kenjirou's last appearance, but he's bound to show up in the future.
Character PERSONALITY: It is impossible to properly describe Kenjirou without drawing a clear line across his personality. The Kenjirou of today is very different from the man of a mere three years ago, so let’s start by describing how he was for the larger part of his life.
Kenji has been accurately called ‘human trash’ by his students, but damned if he wasn’t the funniest trash out there. He spoke (still does, actually) in an overly casual tone in the original Japanese and came across as one of the more eccentric teachers at times, spending entire budgets on fish specimens at a whim, being completely flippant unless you threaten to bring it up to his bosses (to the point where him being late was considered the norm), and actually opting to walk out of the room when he thinks something overly romantic is going on between two students at school rather than try to stop it. He likes to tease, bringing up whatever trivial (but oh so embarrassing) facts on people he can, and is actually rather flaky, though not any less trustworthy when it actually counts, helping in emergencies and providing a shoulder to cry on (and actually being pretty cheerful when talking to students). He actually gave 100 bucks to one of his students once, with no other motive than to have the two-person class enjoy a day at the school festival. Incidentally, he also seems to have had a thing for pachinko.
You know what they say about all good things, though. Kenjirou
used to be all these things. While it can be assumed that Kenji lets these traits surface from time to time (in whatever odd moment of happiness he stumbles upon), he has changed quite a bit in two years. The death of his daughter quite likely had something to do with it. Nowadays, Kenjirou actually does go to great lengths to help certain students improve their grades (and in this canon, there’s a lot of grades that need improving), giving supplementary lessons, and not reacting well at all when it seems like they’re not giving it their all. If nothing else, a common trait shown by him in both times is that he wishes to see his pupils succeed. He’s not entirely humorless, willing to play the straight man once in a while, but outside of a single occasion, we really don’t see much of him after he changed.
Though he doesn’t show it, Kenjirou suffers from perpetual lethargy nowadays, a clear symptom of depression. He doesn’t seem to be able to actually work up the motivation to be excited for anything since his daugher’s suicide, and flat-out states to himself that all the sleeping in the world can’t stop him from feeling tired. Much like his daughter, Kenji never divulges his regrets and insecurities, bottling them all up and continuing to work as a seemingly well-adjusted instructor. It can certainly be assumed that Kenjirou loved Ayano very much to go through such a drastic personality change. At least, we know for a fact that he talked about work to her now and then.
» EXSILIUM INFORMATIONChosen WEAPON: The closest thing Kenjirou had to a weapon on his person was a test tube. Still counted. It will evolve as time goes on, but never offensively.
Character INVENTORY: His outfit and wallet.
» SAMPLESFirst PERSON: [This isn't the first time Kenjirou's face shows up in the comm. That would be this morning. A lot of trial and error in figuring out how the comm works. He doesn't want to just know the base applications - he wants to master it before truly using it.]If this kind of technology were available where I come from, I'd be worried.
[Transmitting live video to a nigh-unlimited number of people, also giving you their own video? That doesn't grow on trees.]You wouldn't believe how many students use their phones in class today. It's
[bzzztcrackle] complicated. This is complicated. Give me just a... hm. Are the modes really locked? If the code for this is lying around, I may...
Ah. Drifted off for a moment, didn't I? I'll introduce myself soon, let me just fix this first.
[Is this guy actually insane?]Third PERSON: "I'm actually impressed."
There's something odd about Kenjirou today. He's usually incredibly strict or, if you somehow catch him out of school, melancholic, but right now? He seems
happy. For what is possibly the first time since most people here have met him. Not coming out of the blue, this uplifting moment is brought by the letter 'C'. As in, the one none of his students went below in their past test. It's not perfect, but it's certainly a rarity, and Kenjirou is more than willing to provide an incentive to have it no longer be one.
"I guess we can have a break, if you promise to make up for it with your own study time. I'll try to organize something for next week, if the principal is up for it. I'll even allow snacks just that once."
Well, at least his manner of speaking hasn't changed.
"Ah. I may be short a few dollars for that, though. Does anyone want to organize a group donation?"
His personality, on the other hand...
